How to Get from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa

LIR Airport (Guanacaste Airport, or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport) offers the advantage of getting to Santa Teresa without dealing with the ferry crossing you must navigate if flying into SJO International Airport in San José.

Thus, many travelers choose to fly into Liberia Airport if they plan to start their Costa Rica vacation in Santa Teresa, or if the whole purpose of their trip is to visit Santa Teresa.

Transportation Options

Currently, you can choose from a variety of different transportation options to get to Santa Teresa. Depending on your budget and schedule, these are the best ways to get from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa. We'll review them from least expensive to most expensive.

Public Buses

If your Spanish is fluent and you don't mind navigating Costa Rica's unpredictable public bus system, this will be the best option if you have a budget of $20 USD or less to get from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa. Keep in mind that this option only works if you are traveling with a backpack only. Surfboards are a no-go for starters — there isn't enough space on the public buses, and you'll make everyone on the bus uncomfortable. Do yourself and others on the public bus a favor and hire a private van if you're traveling with surfboards.

Sansa Local Flight

Sansa operates daily flights from LIR Airport to Cobano Airport during the high season (none available when we checked before publishing this article). The price is approximately $150 USD per person, plus about $60 for a taxi from Cobano Airport to your destination in Santa Teresa. For a solo traveler, this is a pretty good option — about $210 USD and only 1 hour and 30 minutes of travel time.

For couples or larger groups, you'll need to weigh the cost-benefit of a short flight versus a private transfer, which takes about 4 hours to reach Santa Teresa.

Car Rental

If you want ultimate flexibility, renting a car is by far your best option. But there are two major factors to consider: 1) expensive damage fees, 2) complicated routes around Santa Teresa that are not covered by common navigation apps.

The first factor is one we have seen way too often. You're driving around and boom, a pothole damages your tire and rim. Or even worse, you park at an isolated spot just to come back and find someone broke one of your windows. Things like this can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in damage fees, even if you have insurance.

The second one is a much more benign drawback, but one that even our experienced drivers have experienced. One of two things can happen: 1) your navigation app calculates the fastest route to your destination based on people who cut through unpaved forest paths when four-wheeling (been there, done that), and you end up stuck on a muddy trail. Or 2) you lose cell coverage, your maps do not update, and you find yourself driving in circles without a signal to help you get back to the main route.

The best way to get to Santa Teresa is a private shuttle or transfer. The main benefit is that you are not bound by scheduled transit and can travel at your own leisure. Yes, it's more expensive than the first two options, but the peace of mind and a service that will work around your schedule eliminate any travel anxiety you might have.

For example, say you book a flight between LIR Airport and Cobano, but your inbound flight is delayed and you miss your connecting flight. Not only will you lose your local flight fare, but you'll probably need to book a taxi on the spot at a much higher price than a pre-arranged private shuttle.
